• Mason Hoadley, Lund University (confirmed)

• Olle Törnquist, University of Oslo (confirmed)

Aim
The aim of the workshop is to facilitate discussion of research on or relating to Indonesia within the social sciences in the Nordic countries. In the light of the coming 2009 presidential and parliamentary elections in Indonesia this common focus will allow for a variety of social scientific perspectives to contribute to a deeper understanding of Indonesian politics, economy, society and culture after Suharto. We hope that the workshop will function as an inter-disciplinary and cross-regional update for participants.
Application for the workshop is to be sent to norindostudies@gmail.com by April 15th, 2009, including an abstract of a maximum of 500 words.
They hope to have a small amount available for travel grants for Master’s students. Students who wish to apply for travel grants should do so no later than 10 April.
The Nordic Indonesia Studies Network (NISN)
The workshop will serve as the inaugural event for a new research network; the Nordic Indonesia Studies Network (NISN). Much scholarly work on Indonesia is carried out in and from the Nordic countries, but few links are drawn between the research groups and institutions across or even within the different Nordic countries. This workshop seeks to remedy this situation by forming a new Nordic Indonesia Studies Network under the auspices of the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies.

| The Global Rise of Contemporary East Asian Visual Arts
Two academic seminars and two In Situ Art Talks on Asian visual arts related to popular culture, global economy and social change. An innovative and ambitious collaboration between University of Copenhagen, Aarhus University and a number of other academic and art institutions, the seminar events will take place over two weekends in Copenhagen (March 28-29) and Aarhus (May 16-17).
With the rise of the Asian economies, there has been a substantial recentering of global visual arts culture on Asia as a major producer of the world’s images and visual culture. Visualising Asian Modernity is a series of seminar events that will examine the international impact of the contemporary Asian art world in relation to social change in East Asian societies. The aim is to create a forum for critical discussion on Asian visual art: how it is presented outside of Asia and how this field of visual arts is related to the broader development of popular culture and society.

The fate of the Rohingya people reverted our attention to the suffering of the people of Burma/Myanmar. This blog tries to identify a more flexible and sophisticated strategy from Europe for helping the people of Burma/Myanmar. This strategy would involve identifying opportunities to work on humanitarian and development issues despite the government tactics that are not approved of. At the same time, it would mean a flexible strategy of supporting the progressive initiatives and people in the government and opposing the less progressive people and projects.
