Seit dem Herbst 2008 arbeitete ein Teil des SEAS Teams an der Konzeption eines partizipativen Jugendprojekts das sich zwischen den thematischen Polen Migration, Integration und Kultur aufspannt. Mit Unterstützung der Generaldirektion Bildung und Kultur der Europäischen Kommission kann das Projekt ViennAsian nun offiziell ab dem 01.12.2008 starten. Das voraussichtliche Projektende ist der Herbst 2009. Kernbereich des Projekts ist ein Fotowettbewerb, welcher zusammen mit drei Workshops in einer öffentlichen und repräsentativen Ausstellung enden wird. Die Ausgangssituation des Projekts bildet die Feststellung dass im Vergleich zur südosteuropäischen und afrikanischen Bevölkerungsgruppe im Ballungsraum Wien, den etwa 97.000 asiatischen MigrantInnen medial und gesellschaftlich relativ wenig Aufmerksamkeit zukommt. Das mehrstufige Fotoprojekt ViennAsian soll dem entgegenwirken und einen Einblick in Fremd- und Selbstwahrnehmung dieser Bevölkerungsgruppe bieten. Im Vordergrund des Projekts steht damit die Sichtbarmachung der öffentlich und kulturell unterrepräsentierten südost- und ostasiatischen Bevölkerungsgruppe in Wien und repräsentativ damit in Österreich.
Mit der Wahl einer Zielgruppe von Jugendlichen zwischen 14 und 20 Jahren – mit oder ohne asiatischen Migrationshintergrund, jedoch gemeinsamen Interesse an Region, Menschen und Ausstellungsthema, erwarten wir uns innovative und kreative Beiträge und damit Perspektiven auf und aus dieser Bevölkerungsgruppe. Die Ausschreibung des Fotowettbewerbs fordert teilnehmende Jugendliche auf, das Projektthema „ViennAsian“ fotografisch umzusetzen. Fototechnische, journalistische und künstlerische Unterstützung finden die TeilnehmerInnen durch begleitend stattfindende kostenfreie Workshops. Eine Mischung aus Online und Jury Voting bestimmt anschließend über die Auswahl an Beiträgen, die den Inhalt der Fotoausstellung bilden werden und in Rahmen welcher sich ein breites Publikum auf kulturelle Spurensuche begeben kann.
Neben finanzieller Unterstützung der EU durch das Programm Jugend in Aktion bemüht sich das 5-köpfige Team um weitere Förderung von Seiten der Stadt Wien. Personell erhalten wir zudem Unterstützung durch ausgeschriebene Praktika. Eine wissenschaftliche Auswertung ist zusätzlich in Planung.

Within the context of SEAS’s cultural spin-off youth & photography project VIENNASIAN we want to invite projects and initiatives in Vienna and Austria that are covering Asian culture, photography or youth culture to participate in our OPEN SPACE at Ragnarhof gallery, Vienna, 16th district. The exhibition of our project’s results runs from September 8 to 30.

In autumn 2008 a section of our team started working on a project-design incorporating themes of migration, integration, fine arts and cultural representation. Subsequently this has become a participatory youth project by the name “viennasian”.
With the support of DG Education and Culture of the European Commission, our project officially started on December 1, 2008. The scheduled closing is autumn 2009.
Central to this project is a photographic competition, which is accompanied by three workshops on different photographic topics and techniques and will result in a public exhibition. A basic element of our project’s rationale is perception of lack of public representation of the Asian community in Vienna’s media and societal sphere. This especially holds true if compared to other migrant groups. Our multi-staged photo project “viennasian” is to counteract this situation and to bring forward new insights into self-perception and perception by others of the so called Asian community as well as into is cultural traces, potential and dynamics in the Austrian capital. By deliberately operating with broad terms and concepts we aim at avoid presumptions and limiting the scope of different approaches to our project.
One of our primary goals is to bring to light and explore the situation of the South East- and East Asian community in Vienna and accentuate processes of cultural exchange and production and its inherent creative potential.
As our focus group we chose adolescents aged between 14 and 20 years with or without an “Asian background”, yet the common interest in our project’s theme, photography and culture. Out of this, we expect innovative and creative contributions and fresh perspectives on and from within our focus group and the Asian community. Our competition’s topic invites its participants to freely and broadly interpret the term “viennasian” by using photography as a way to express themselves and communicate to others. Different workshops on general photographic skills, on photo documentary and journalistic photography as well as fine art and experimental photography will be provided free of charge to the participants. A jury of photo and media professional as well as the online visitors of our site will select contributions to win the contest and to be exhibited in a final gallery show.
Aside from financial support through the European Union’s “Youth in Action” programme, we are hoping for further support through the city of Vienna as well as a broad range of sponsors. We furthermore aim at establishing a sound embedded scientific support for our project. Additional assistance and expertise has already been organized by including members of our focus groups into our project team.
