CfP ASEAS Issue 3(2) & 4(1)

Below you will find the two foci for the upcoming issues of the Austrian Journal of South-East Asian Studies (ASEAS). Please bear in mind that also submissions outside the foci are accepted as usual.

ASEAS 3(2) – Focus GENDER & GENDER STUDIES

The upcoming issue of the Austrian Journal of South-East Asian Studies aims at featuring a focus on Gender and Gender Studies in South-East Asia. Of special interest to the board of editors are submissions dealing with one or several of the following issues:

  • The situation of Gender Studies within the academic sphere and Social Sciences: Gender discourse (its topics, aims, relevance, actors etc.) within South-East Asian Studies and in Social Sciences and Humanities in the region itself and or from a comparative perspective.
  • Possible methodological or theoretical specifics in gender related research in SEA; state of the art in SEA-Masculinity and Women´s Studies.
  • The correlation between Gender Studies and politics or religion in SEA.
  • SEA Gender Studies in the context of academic publishing and reception in SEA and South-East Asian Studies (especially from a comparative perspective).
  • Gender Studies theory development from a SEA perspective.
  • The institutional environment for the study and research in the field of Gender Studies in South-East Asia or from outside the region with a regional focus on SEA (please also take note of our category “Network South-East Asia Research aiming at presenting academic and independent research institutions and / or to announce and summarize conferences) as well as submissions dealing with specific contexts for research on gender issues e.g. research situations in the field.

ASEAS 4(1) – Focus TOURISM

The issue 4 (1) of the Austrian Journal of South-East Asian Studies aims at featuring a focus on Tourism in South-East Asia. Of special interest to the board of editors are submissions dealing with one or several of the following issues

  • Domestic and Asian tourism in South-East Asia: while most academic work focuses on western tourists, one can observe a growth of domestic tourism within the South-East Asian countries as well a rise of Asian tourism to South-East Asia
  • Uncovering ‘host experiences’: what are the tourism-generated perspectives, views, challenges and chances of the members of the destination areas?
  • Power and Representation in ethnic theme parks/human zoos/cultural festivals
  • Blessings for all? Alternative tourism development in SEA (community based-, pro-poor-, eco-tourism)
  • Retiree tourism and second home development, health tourism
  • Possible Methodological or Theory-wise specifics for Tourism related research in SEA
