Gesellschaft für Südostasienwissenschaften (SEAS), Wien – Bildung und Networking
Im Jahr 2005 starteten StudentInnen, DiplomandInnen, DissertantInnen sowie etablierte WissenschafterInnen und ForscherInnen, die sich besonders für die Region Südostasien interessieren, ihre Aktivitäten innerhalb der Gesellschaft für Südostasienwissenschaften (SEAS) in Wien. Die Förderung des interkulturellen und interdisziplinären wissenschaftlichen Austauschs zu Südostasien ist ein Ziel von SEAS. WissenschafterInnen in und um Österreich unterstützen den Wissenstransfer und die Weiterentwicklung der gemeinsamen Informations- und Kontaktplattform zu Südostasien. Ein Capacity Building für Studierende soll über StudentInnenaustauschprogramme mit Südostasien gefördert werden. Besonderen Stellenwert legt SEAS weiters auf die Organisation von Vorträgen und Konferenzen, um das bisher in Österreich nur sehr begrenzte Forschungs- und Bildungsangebot zu Südostasien auszuweiten und auch einer breiteren allgemeinen Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen. Die Arbeitsschwerpunkte von SEAS liegen daher besonders auf den Bereichen Bildung und Networking.
Ein wichtiger Aspekt unserer Tätigkeit ist, Bewusstsein für die gesellschaftliche und kulturelle Vielfalt Südostasiens, die sich auch in Österreich, und hier vor allem in Wien, widerspiegelt, zu schaffen. Nicht nur die wissenschaftliche Arbeit, sondern auch zivilgesellschaftliche Initiativen sind gefragt – SEAS bemüht sich daher um Kontakt mit südostasiatischen Gruppen in Österreich. Angestrebt wird ein interkultureller Dialog, der die lokalen wissenschaftlich und regional interessierten Gruppen in einem fruchtbaren Austausch vereint. SüdostasiatInnen in Österreich finden in uns eine Organisation, die sich für ihre Belange interessiert und Kontakte zu ÖsterreicherInnen sowie südostasiatischen Netzwerken bietet. Bei Bedarf stellen wir uns auch gerne als Sprachrohr für ihre Interessen zur Verfügung. Synergieeffekte aus der interdisziplinären und interkulturellen Zusammenarbeit von ForscherInnen, SüdostasiatInnen und anderen Interessierten werden angestrebt.
Mit unserer Österreichischen Zeitschrift für Südostasienwissenschaften (ASEAS) bieten wir neben qualitativ hochwertigen wissenschaftlichen Veröffentlichungen zu Südostasien auch Möglichkeiten, Kurzbeiträge zu aktuellen Thematiken oder Konferenzen, Interviews mit Südostasienexperten und Rezensionen neuerer wissenschaftlicher Literatur zu veröffentlichen. Als Online-Publikation, welche durch die Konzeption als zweisprachige online Open-Access-Zeitschrift für alle InteressentInnen frei zugänglich ist, wollen wir zugleich eine breitere internationale Öffentlichkeit auf unsere Aktivitäten aufmerksam machen. Daneben bieten unsere Homepage und E-Newsletter laufend aktualisierte Informationen zu Workshops, Konferenzen und Vortragsreihen, sowie Kontakte und Stellenangebote rund um Themen zu Südostasien.
Das SEAS-Team arbeitet aus Interesse an der Region an der Verbesserung und Erreichung der beschriebenen Zielen der Vernetzung, Forschung und Bildung mit hohem persönlichen Einsatz. Menschen, die sich der Erreichung der oben genannten Ziele anschließen wollen, sind jederzeit für eine aktive Mitarbeit herzlich willkommen.

Society for Southeast Asian Studies (SEAS), Vienna – Education and Networking
The Austrian Society for South-East Asian Studies (SEAS), founded in 2005 in Vienna by established scholars and researchers, Master and PhD students from Austria with a specific scientific and cultural interest on South-East Asia, aims to strengthen and deepen the interdisciplinary and intercultural research on South-East Asia. Scholars in Austria and abroad support the knowledge transfer and the development of our Information and Contact Platform. As teaching and research about South-East Asian topics are very limited in Austria, SEAS offers active support through the organization of lectures and conferences in order to extend the general knowledge about the region within the scientific community and the Austrian public. The two key aspects of our work ‘education’ and ‘networking’ arise from this situation.
Another aim of our activities is the creation of a consciousness for South-East Asian issues beyond the scientific community in Austria. The cultural diversity of South-East Asia is well reflected in Austria, especially in Vienna. For this reason, SEAS seeks and cultivates contacts with South-East Asian diaspora groups in Austria. Through intercultural dialogues the local scientifically and regionally interested communities shall be unified in a process of a fruitful and creative exchange. South-East Asians find an organization interested in their concerns offering contacts to other Austrian and South-East Asian networks and can act as a multiplier and advocate for certain issues if required. Intercultural and interdisciplinary exchange between people with a South-East Asian background creates synergetic effects and facilitates our capacity building efforts on the region as well as our basis for social-scientific research.
With the publication of our Austrian Journal of South-East Asian Studies (ASEAS) we provide a regular platform for high-quality scientific articles on South-East Asian issues as well as granting other scholars or institutions the opportunity to present South-East-Asian related publications like reports on actual developments, international conferences in and about South-East Asia, interviews with experts and literature reviews. ASEAS is conceptualized as a bilingual print and online open access publication to reach a broad national and international public. It is therefore meant as an amendment to the SEAS website and the SEAS newsletter which provide regularly updated information about workshops, conferences and lectures, as well as contacts and job vacancies in the context of South-East Asia.
SEAS is a non profit organization that relies and benefits from the high commitment of its members who are strongly dedicated to South East Asian issues and the organization’s goals networking, research and education. SEAS does not see itself as an enclosed organization. People identifying themselves with our aims and goals and who want to actively participate in our work are encouraged to contact us and welcomed to join anytime on a honorary basis.
