Professorship Social Anthropology of Southeast Asia (University of Bonn)

W 2 Professorship Social Anthropology of Southeast Asia

with an emphasis on labour relations and dependency research

The professorship is for a five year position with a tenure track option and is to
be filled as soon as possible.

We are looking for applicants with a background in anthropology (social an-
thropology, cultural anthropology, ethnology) or Southeast Asian Studies. Re-
quirements are a broad knowledge of cultural or social anthropology and em-
pirical research experience in Southeast Asia.

Preference will be given to applicants with research experience on the subject
of social relations and forms of work that are characterised by dependency and
asymmetrical power relations (such as unfree labour, slavery, asymmetric la-
bour relations, dependence). An explicit openness for historical issues and
questions is expected. The chosen candidate will be expected to take a leading
role in the development of the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Stud-
ies (

Applicants are required to have a completed university degree (Master, Magis-
ter or Staatsexamen), a PhD as well as a Habilitation or equivalent publications
in a subject relevant to the subject of unfree and dependent labour relations.
The successful applicant will be expected to have experience in interdisciplinary
research teams and in working internationally. Extensive teaching experience
and the successful acquisition of third-party research funding is expected.

Call for Applications for Master’s Programme at Heidelberg University

Heidelberg University welcomes applications for its 2-year Master’s Programme in Transcultural Studies. Across disciplines and national borders, students from around the globe can explore the dynamics of cultural exchanges. The emphasis lies on Asian, predominantly East and South Asian, and European cultures.

The M.A. Transcultural Studies is a research-oriented, interdisciplinary programme in the humanities and social sciences with a transregional focus. It offers a wide range of courses within an international research environment and is taught completely in English. Students are trained in transcultural theories and methods as well as in the study of cross-cultural exchanges in past and present, specifically between Asia and Europe. They specialise in one of three study foci: “Society, Economy, and Governance”, “Visual, Media and Material Culture”, or “Knowledge, Belief, and Religion”. They will learn to critically evaluate research tools and methodologies from different disciplines in order to arrive at a set of methods and theories, which is framed according to the specific research question and material.

Students are encouraged to spend their third semester abroad on study exchange or conducting a research oriented internship. They can benefit from partnerships with Tokyo and Kyoto University, the University of Hyderabad and Seoul National University that also include funding programmes. A study exchange to other Asian, as well as European countries is also possible.

Applicants must hold a B.A. or equivalent (minimum three years of study) in a discipline of the humanities or social sciences with an above-average grade. Furthermore, proficiency in English and two more languages is required

Stellenausschreibung: Akademische/r Mitarbeiter/in an der Universität Heidelberg

Am Institut für Ethnologie an der Universität Heidelberg ist eine befristete Vollzeitstelle als

Akademische/r Mitarbeiter/in

für drei Jahre ab dem 01.03.2017 zu besetzen.

Die Aufgaben sind schwerpunktmäßig Lehre (insbesondere grundständige Lehre sowie forschendes Lehren) und die Betreuung von Studierenden im BA Studiengang Ethnologie. Des Weiteren umfasst das Aufgabengebiet eigene wissenschaftliche Tätigkeiten, wie die Erarbeitung eines Projektantrags, und Mitarbeit bei administrativen Aufgaben.
